Tennis Racquet Customization Services
I provide a variety of customization services to fine-tune your tennis racquet to provide the best playing experience and performance.
Grip Size Increase
Increasing grip size is a common necessity with junior players as they grow older and their hand size increases while they wish to continue to use the same racquet to maximize their investment. Or perhaps you have purchased a racquet second-hand and the grip size is smaller than you usually use.
Most players simply wrap 1 or 2 extra overgrips if they want to bulk up their grip size but this is not the "proper" way to increase your grip size as it makes the handle too rounded and "mushy", compromising the playability of the racquet and ultimately, your comfort and performance on the court.
First of all, if you are not sure that you need this service, I can help you determine if your grip size is indeed too small for your hand size. There is no charge for this consultation. Secondly, once we have determined that your grip size is too small, I can build up your grip size either a half size, 1 full size or 1.5 sizes. For example a 4 1/4 grip can be increased a full size to 4 3/8 or slightly smaller or slightly larger than that. A grip cannot effectively be increased by more than 1.5-2 sizes as it then becomes too rounded and the bevel shape of the grip is not clearly felt when you hold the racquet.
I increase your grip size using purpose built heat shrink sleeves meant for increasing tennis grip sizes. These are applied underneath the original grip that comes with the racquet, and your racquet is then re-gripped with a new suitable replacement grip, and finally an overgrip is applied if that is what you usually play with.
Cost: $15 (includes labour and all materials - heat shrink sleeve, replacement grip and overgrip)
Racquet Weight and Balance Customization
Although you might have purchased the exact same racquet as your favorite pro player, it is almost 100% certain that you are not really playing with the "same" racquet as that pro. This is because almost all pros have their racquets customized to more ideally suit their particular style of play. This customization includes adjusting the weight of the racquet, the balance, and the swingweight, among other more subtle factors.
The pros know the benefit that such customization can bring to their games, and even if you are not competing among the pro ranks, you can certainly benefit from some customizations if you are serious about improving your results on the court.
Customizations are generally performed by adding some weight to various points on the racquet to alter the balance, feel, stability and maneuverability. However, we cannot simply add weight to any part of the racquet and achieve the optimal result. The customization process starts with personal consultation between myself and you, so that I can understand your style of play and what you are looking for out of your equipment that you are not currently getting. After that, I take your racquet and analyze it carefully to note its current static weight, balance point and swingweight, and depending on your needs, add some lead tape or lead weight at strategic points on the racquet frame (these do not permanently mar the racquet and can always be removed later if desired). Your racquet is then returned to you to play with and provide feedback so that we can iterate over this process a few more times if necessary until we achieve the results that you are looking for.
Cost: Starts from $25 (includes labour and all materials)
Racquet Matching
If you have had one of your racquets customized (see above) either by me or another racquet technician, you will probably want to get all of your racquets of the same make and model "matched" to your new ideal specs. Additionally, due to variances in quality control processes by racquet manufacturers today, even 2 uncustomized racquets of the same make, model and grip size, are unlikely to actually have exactly the same specifications. If you own several of the same racquets, you might have already noticed this due to the phenomenon where you find yourself having a "favorite" racquet among those several racquets, despite all of them being of the same make and model.
In this case, I perform racquet matching to get all your racquets to feel as close as possible to each other.
Cost: $15 per racquet
